Politics and Prose on Connecticut Avenue and at The Wharf are closed for Thanksgiving.

As has become a tradition for us, we mark the Thanksgiving holiday with this message of thanks to the many people who support Politics and Prose and the role it plays in the civic life of our community.  Again this season we can look back with much appreciation on a year that has produced a bounty of great books and literary programs. As a result of your sustained patronage, P&P continues to thrive.

But these times also continue to present challenges. Over the course of the past year, we’ve seen our country become even more riven by bitter political partisanship and incivility, while forces of intolerance and insensitivity appear on the rise. Any hope for national unity appears to have faded. Under such circumstances, the role of bookstores as spaces that foster community, tolerance, and inclusivity is more critical than ever. Please know that all of us at P&P remain committed to providing a haven for people to gather, browse, converse, and reflect—as well as to enjoy coffee or a meal.

It’s now been six-and-a-half years since the two of us assumed ownership of P&P, and we’re continually inspired by the many words of encouragement that customers offer. P&P is so fortunate to serve a community where people understand the importance of buying local, appreciate the special value of an independent bookstore, and believe in the store’s larger mission of promoting the discussion of literature and the rigorous and respectful exchange of ideas. Such backing helped spur our decision this year to open two new branches at The Wharf and Union Market and to expand the flagship store on Connecticut Avenue NW.

As successful as P&P remains, we don’t take good fortune for granted. We know that as a local business we can always do better—and that many of you won’t be shy about letting us know what should be improved. We look forward to even deeper ties throughout the Washington area in the months ahead.

Our gratitude to one and all. And Happy Thanksgiving!

— Brad and Lissa
