Bhaskar Sunkara - The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality — in conversation with Elizabeth Bruenig — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Friday, May 3, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Socialism has been by turns vilified, idealized, and distorted through a Soviet lens; today, championed by Bernie Sanders and viewed favorably by more than one third of Americans, it seems to be in the ascendant. In this authoritative primer, Sunkara, founder and editor of Jacobin, the nation’s largest socialist magazine, traces socialism’s history since the mid-1800s and presents a realistic vision of its future. One of the left’s most influential public intellectuals, Sunkara explains that socialism is much more than an economic system, and shows that it can be an effective means of fighting oppression, securing rights, and creating new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities. Sunkara will be in conversation with Elizabeth Bruenig, an opinion columnist at The Washington Post.
