As the radical 1960s and ‘70s mellowed into the Reagan years, six women who had grown up protesting the Vietnam War and fighting for Black and Native American rights vowed to carry on the struggle. Calling themselves the May 19th Communist Organization (M19), from 1978 to 1985 they launched a string of violent actions which included prison breaks, bank robberies, and bombings—one of which, on November 7, 1983, targeted the U.S. capitol. In this long overdue account of the nation’s only female terrorist organization, Rosenau, a senior research scientist and former State Department counterterrorism advisor, charts in chilling detail the roots of homegrown extremism.
