David L. Roll - George Marshall: Defender of the Republic

Upcoming Event
Sunday, July 14, 2019 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

General George C. Marshall (1880-1959) fought in both World Wars, served as chief of staff under FDR and Truman, and was both Secretary of State and Defense under Truman. He was named Time’s “Man of the Year” in 1943 and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953. In most accounts, however, Marshall’s reputation rests on his role in the Second World War. In this comprehensive biography, Roll, author of The Hopkins Touch, draws on newly available sources to detail how Marshal modernized combat training between the world wars, organized the largest military expansion in U.S. history, restored U.S. military morale before the Korean War, and helped shape America's postwar emergence as a superpower.
