Karen Sagstetter - Commotion & Elizabeth Jacobson - Not Into the Blossoms and Not Into the Air — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, May 5, 2019 - 5:00pm to 6:00pm

Sagstetter, a former head of publications at the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries, is the author of two poetry chapbooks, two nonfiction books, and a collection of linked stories, The Thing with Willie. In her first full-length collection of poems, she draws on her extensive travels—she’s visited more than fifty countries, including studying in Japan as a Fulbright journalist—to convey the non-stop activity of life across the planet, as well as the attendant emotions of all this commotion. Paring down large questions to finely observed moments, Sagstetter shows how much rides on the ordinary details of daily life: “if rain turns to sleet, if the stars go home /will you still love me, will you let me stay?”

Founding director of the WingSpan Poetry Project, Jacobson is the author of Her Knees Pulled In and two poetry chapbooks. Winner of the New Measure Poetry Prize, her second full-length collection is a dazzling mix of forms—from lyrics and prose poems to intricately structured multi-part pieces—that merges close observation of nature with deep philosophical questions: “a very old tree is not a feeling. / But when I think of how very old the tree is, a feeling comes.” In awarding the prize, poet Marianne Boruch described Jacobson’s “wild remarkable book” as “a true savoring of the world…[that] starts in clarity and ends in mystery.”
