Mary L. Gray - Ghost Work: How to Stop Silicon Valley from Building a New Global Underclass

Upcoming Event
Sunday, May 12, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

While commentators on the future of work have focused on the threats of AI, Gray, senior researcher at Microsoft Research and fellow at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, shows that a more immediate danger lies in corporations’ reliance on a largely invisible human labor force. A growing “ghost economy,” workers at companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft do jobs ranging from flagging X-rated content and decoding pizza orders to proofreading and designing engine parts. Made up of recent college graduates, minorities shut out of the job market, and professionals who can’t afford to retire, these workers have little contact with employers or colleagues and often work for less than minimum wage and with no benefits. Gray, with co-author Siddharth Suri, urges us to find ways to create jobs that offer opportunities rather than the sort of exploitation going on now.
