Hansen grew up in a small, conservative New Jersey town. She didn’t know she’d been living in a bubble until the combination of 9/11 and overseas travel showed her the gap between how Americans think of themselves and how they’re viewed abroad. Hansen, now an Istanbul-based journalist and a contributing writer to The New York Times Magazine, retraces her global coming-of-age with this hybrid memoir/travelogue. Intertwining personal reflection, history, and the experiences of many years of reporting from Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran, Hansen’s book is a revealing portrait of what it means to be American in a world where the old certainties no longer hold.
