Dystopian fiction is written as social critique. Classic dystopias persist because they speak beyond their historical moment to universal questions about humanity and civilization. In this seminar-style, discussion-based class, over the course of three weeks we will read three classic dystopian novels. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) presents a world-wide political regime that wields almost total control over the creation of individuals. George Orwell’s 1984 (1949) imagines a government which actively manipulates truth through language. Joanna Russ’s The Female Man (1975) brings together multiple worlds to explore questions of power and gender. Three Wednesdays: April 22, 29, and May 6, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley

1984, by George Orwell

The Female Man, by Joanna Russ
