Lecture and Discussion. This live class will be recorded and available for later viewing.

Jane Austen is one of the very few writers who inspire legions of readers to re-read -- not just once or twice over a lifetime but multiple times. In this course we will read four of the six completed novels, two drafted in Austen’s earlier years (Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice) and two written in maturity (Mansfield Park and Emma). We’ll explore the social, historical, and literary contexts that shaped her work, identify her innovative narrative and linguistic techniques, and consider how she responds to such matters as social hierarchy and class relations in Regency England, “conduct book culture” and women’s live, colonialism and slavery, and more. (Northanger Abbey and Persuasion fans: rest assured we will make ample reference along the way to these delightful and important novels!)
