Finch’s new book joins The Woman in the Water and The Vanishing Man as the third in a trilogy of prequels to his bestselling Charles Lenox series, which introduced the Victorian gentleman and amateur sleuth with 2007’s A Beautiful Blue Death. Set in London in 1855, the novel opens with Lenox facing what may be a nearly perfect crime: a man found dead in a first-class car at Paddington Station, who has no luggage, nothing in his pockets, and bears no outward signs of violence. Yet even without any clues Lenox is sure there’s been foul play, and though Scotland Yard discourages him, he launches an investigation.

Since launching her Maggie Hope series in 2012, MacNeal, winner of the Barry award, has taken the eponymous British-born, American-reared, math whiz from a job as Winston Churchill’s secretary to a career solving mysteries of national importance as a spy and secret agent. The ninth installment opens in London in December 1942 where Maggie, though intending to take a much needed break from Special Operations, is inveigled into helping with a case involving a stolen Stradivarius. She’s no sooner gotten started, however, than she’s called upon to assist in the investigation of a serial killer—and eventually finds a connection between the seemingly unrelated crimes.
