Emily Nemens - The Cactus League — in conversation with Leslie Pietrzyk — at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Thursday, February 6, 2020 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Narrated by a sportscaster, Nemens’s character-driven debut novel recounts the on- and off-field activities of the Los Angeles Lions baseball team, their coaches, fans, and hangers-on. Set in 2011, the novel unfolds at the team’s spring training facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. It’s murderously hot, but hopes are high, especially for Jason Goodyear, the Lions’ star outfielder. Jason is struggling, however, and he’s not the only one. In a pitch perfect series of interlacing narratives, Nemens, editor of The Paris Review, recounts Jason’s story as well as those of a batting coach trying to stay relevant, a sports agent facing the end of his career, and a woman hoping for one more summer fling. Nemens will be in conversation with Leslie Pietrzyk, author, most recently, of Silver Girl.
