Nathalie Handal - Life in a Country Album, Elizabeth Lindsey Rogers - The Tilt Torn Away from the Seasons, and Chet'la Sebree - Mistress — at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, February 9, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

The latest collection from the prolific poet, editor, playwright, and author of Words without Borders’ “The City and the Writer” column, draws on Handal’s rich, multi-cultural background—she grew up in Latin America, France, and the Middle East and was educated in Asia, the U.S., and the UK—for a vivid lyrical exploration of today’s restless and divided world. From “Les chemins lumière” and the “Country of Torn Men” to “Takes at the Bowery” and “American Camino,” Handal examines urgent questions of hybrid identities, home, language, citizenship, and freedom.

In her powerful new book, Rogers combines application forms, crowns of sonnets, and sprawling, innovative combinations of words and white space to tell a dystopian tale of the end of life on Earth and the terraforming of Mars. Though the fleeing Earthlings witnessed the ecological destruction their actions inflicted on their old planet and vow to do better on their new one, they fall at once into the same patterns of patriarchal violence and colonialist exploitation. As history begins to repeat itself, Rogers, a widely published poet and essayist who has contributed to Best American Nonrequired Reading and Best American Travel Writing, dramatizes a chilling parable of the American frontier.

Sebree’s powerful debut confronts both the way we see Black women and how history has treated one Black woman in particular: Sally Hemings. Presented as a conversation between Hemings and a twenty-first century narrator, the poems enact a complex temporal dialogue that illuminates several centuries of socio-cultural changes through both a formal diversity employing sonnets, prose poems, and free verse, and the personas’ engagements with historical texts, art, literature, popular culture, and language. In an extraordinary series of poems considering the meanings of “mistress,” Sebree, a poet, editor, and educator who holds an MFA from American University, shows that we generally make narrow use of a word that has associations with strength and authority.
