Upcoming Event
Monday, August 2, 2021 - 5:00pm

Politics and Prose is delighted to partner with DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and Pepco for an inspirational program for teens with author/illustrator Ben Zhu who will discuss his debut picture book Dessert Island and his art process.

Monkey and Fox are stuck on their own deserted islands. Monkey’s is lush, rich and tasty, while Fox’s is spare and rocky. When pieces of Monkey’s Dessert Island begin to drop off and float to Fox, readers being to see the story from two very different viewpoints. Author and illustrator Ben Zhu’s thoughtful picture book tells a story about sustainability and sharing resources in an appealing way that will speak to both kids and grown-ups alike.

The first 50 young people to join the event and select the "Free Event Admission + Free Book" option at registration will receive a complimentary copy of Dessert Island for their home library (one book per family please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their books up in the Children's Room at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW, Washington, DC, beginning July 26. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.

This program is presented in conjunction with D.C. Public Library’s Know Your Power contest, sponsored by Pepco. Teens are invited to submit an original work of writing, photography, illustration, or music that expresses their feelings on a social issue that matters to them.
