P&P Live! & DC Public Library Present Ambreen Tariq-Fatima's Great Outdoors with Tara Thomas

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, June 15, 2021 - 4:00pm

When Ambreen Tariq was eight years old her family moved from India to Minnesota in the depths of winter. When Spring came around her family saved up for a tent and ventured into the great outdoors, an experience that would shape Ambreen’s future path and lead to a life-long love of nature. In Fatima’s Great Outdoors we get a peek into that first camping trip that Ambreen and her family took with all of its joyful and difficult moments. Join us for a conversation with Ambreen and the DC Public Library to discuss her book, her initiative to encourage more people of color to hike and camp, and the importance of environmental advocacy.

Ambreen will be in conversation with Tara Thomas, Children's Librarian with the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial branch of DC Public Library.

We are excited to announce that the first 50 attendees/families to join the event and select the "Free Event Admission + Free Book" option at registration will receive a complimentary copy of Fatima’s Great Outdoors for their home library (one book per family please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their books up at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW, Washington, DC, beginning June 14. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation.

Ambreen Tariq is the founder of @BrownPeopleCamping, a social media campaign that promotes greater diversity in public lands and outdoors community. Ambreen uses storytelling to share how her life experiences as a Muslim, South-Asian American immigrant woman have shaped her love for the outdoors. Ambreen is a full-time federal employee and ambassador for REI in the Washington, DC area. She is also the co-founder of Outdoor Muslims, sits on the board of Directors of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and is an advisor council member of the Sierra Club’s Outdoors for All campaign. Fatima’s Great Outdoors is her debut picture book.
