P&P Live! Jeffrey Selingo-Who Gets in and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions—in conversation with Melissa Korn

Upcoming Event
Monday, October 5, 2020 - 7:00pm

Most people don’t have to be told that the college admissions process is infuriatingly opaque. That’s why an award-winning higher education journalist spent parts of 2018 and 2019 embedded at three different institutions, finding out how they actually look at applications. As he discovered, selective schools’ decisions often have more to do with the college or university’s needs than with what’s best for students. Written with empathy and precision, this revealing book questions our winner-take-all culture of success—and might help students choose schools that are actually right for them. Join Jeffrey Selingo and Wall Street Journal reporter Melissa Korn as they discuss the confusing and secretive world of college admissions.

Jeffrey Selingo has reported on higher education for more than 20 years. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Atlantic, and The Wall Street Journal. He’s a special advisor to the president of Arizona State University and has also served as visiting scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Selingo is the bestselling author of There Is Life After College and College (Un)Bound. He lives in Washington, DC, with his family.

Melissa Korn is co-author of UNACCEPTABLE: Privilege, Deceit & the Making of the College Admissions Scandal, with Jennifer Levitz. She is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal in New York covering higher education, where she writes about college admissions, university finances, and classroom controversies.
