Upcoming Event
Friday, October 16, 2020 - 6:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

Join Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o as he discusses his newest, "THE PERFECT NINE" with his son Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ on P&P Live!

A dazzling, genre-defying novel in verse from the author Delia Owens says "tackles the absurdities, injustices, and corruption of a continent"

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's novels and memoirs have received glowing praise from the likes of President Barack Obama, the New Yorker, the New York Times Book Review, The Guardian, and NPR; he has been a finalist for the Man International Booker Prize and is annually tipped to win the Nobel Prize for Literature; and his books have sold tens of thousands of copies around the world.

One of the leading writers and scholars at work today, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was born in Limuru, Kenya, in 1938. He is the author of A Grain of Wheat; Weep Not, Child; and Petals of Blood, as well as Birth of a Dream Weaver, Wrestling with the Devil, Minutes of Glory, and The Perfect Nine (all from The New Press). Currently Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature and the director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at the University of California, Irvine, Ngũgĩ is the recipient of twelve honorary doctorates, among other awards, and has been nominated for the Man Booker International Prize.

Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ is an Associate Professor of English at Cornell University and the author of The Rise of the African Novel: Politics of Language, Identity and Ownership, the novels Mrs. Shaw, Black Star Nairobi, Nairobi Heat, and two books of poetry, Logotherapy and Hurling Words at Consciousness. Unbury Our Dead With Song (a novel about competing Tizita musicians) is forthcoming from Cassava Republic Press (Fall of 2020).

Instead of a set ticket price, we have provided a couple different ways for you to attend this event. If you'd like to purchase a copy of the book, you will not be charged an extra fee for a ticket, and we can either ship your copy, or you can retrieve it at one of our stores.

Additionally, you can contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. A suggested contribution of $5, $10, whatever you can afford, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.

We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times, and we will continue to make our programming as accessible as possible. If you are unable to support us with a purchase, you can register for the event for free. We thank you for support, now and always.
