William Wheeler - State of War: MS-13 and El Salvador's World of Violence — in conversation with Thomas Edsall

Upcoming Event
Saturday, January 18, 2020 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

In this comprehensive portrait of the notorious MS-13 gang, Wheeler traces its growth directly to U.S. Central American policies from the late 1970s. Taking us through three generations, Wheeler, an award-winning foreign correspondent and host of his Pulitzer-supported podcast, “Detours: Conversations with Global Storytellers,” recounts the group’s origins in 1980s Los Angeles; formed by Salvadoran refugees to protect themselves from other gangs, it spread south of the border after many of its members were deported in the early 1990s. Countering Trump’s assertions linking crime and immigration, Wheeler shows it’s not MS-13 storming the border, but the victims of this American export. Wheeler will be in conversation with Thomas Edsall, who writes a weekly opinion column for The New York Times online.
