Siblings Leah and Alan get the surprise of their lives one morning when they wake to find themselves in the middle of a forest. As they try to make their way home, they encounter a lady who keeps bees as pets, three lions dressed as dandies, and an anglerfish waiting for a subway train. Ultimately, however, they discover the truth of The Secret of the Stone Frog (Toon, $14.95) who pops up at intervals along their journey: stay on the path if you want to return home. David Nytra’s lushly detailed background illustrations contrast delightfully with the simply drawn figures of Leah, Alan, and the frog in this gentle story. Ages 8-11. JLM

Frank Viva’s imaginative and visually striking A Trip to the Bottom of the World with Mouse (Toon, $12.95) provides a refreshing alternative to more traditional early readers. Though the text is designed to be approachable for beginning readers through the use of simple vocabulary and repetitive sentence structures, the content is far from predictable. As Mouse and his friend travel by boat across the sea (a journey inspired by the author’s own Antarctic voyage) they make friends with various sea creatures, nearly all of whom are initially misidentified in a series of increasingly silly and absurd guesses by the impatient and curious Mouse. The bold, colorful graphics and graphic novel-style presentation highlight both the plot and the text itself. Managing to maintain sufficiently elementary language without sacrificing reader interest, this is the perfect treat for beginning readers. Ages 5-7. CEB

Thomas Stevens went by bicycle; Nellie Bly opted for trains and ships; Joshua Slocum sailed. Inspired by Jules Verne’s Phileas Fogg, all three aspired to go Around the World (Candlewick, $24.99), and all three succeeded. Matt Phelan’s captivating graphic triple biography tells the true story of these nineteenth-century adventurers, each with his or her own means of transport and unique motivation. With a chapter devoted to each person, Phelan provides maps of the journeys, incorporates quotes from his subjects’ autobiographies, and relays the thrill of adventure with words and pictures. Ages 10 and up. HWP
