The two stories in Sam Alden's collection It Never Happened Again are poetic and nuanced. "Hawaii 1997" is a heartbreaking story capturing a moment of impossible connection between a boy and girl. "Anime" is a longer story, though as developed as any short story to produce thoughtful and emotionally resonating final moment. Alden's illustrative and narrative tone will fill you with a range of emotions most comics artists can only dream of--it's all in the moment, in the light and in the shadows, and it's all in the pace of the panels and the turning of the page, and Alden seems to do it all with a natural storyteller's grace. Though short, this book packs more emotional weight than those twice its size.

The fourth volume in the Graphic Canon series is not what you think it is. This is not a book for children. This is Children’ Literature, in all its darkness, in all its twisted ways, and in all its truth. The adaptations in this collection vary wildly, from illustration to fine art, to comics and paintings, and they all take well know children folk tales and fairy tales and popular stories and reinterprets them. This is a finely collected anthology and an excellent follow-up to the first three volumes.

The tale of Blacksad continues. The hardboiled detective finds himself driving across the south to Amarillo, Texas where he'll stumble into another murder needing to be solved. Once again the lush watercolors and finely-wrought anthropomorphized characters are the showcase in this wonderful series. Guarnido's art is a pure joy to experience, and the world he and Diaz Canales creates just begs to be revisited. Full of period jewels like Beat writers, circus crews, oil towns and the great American highway, Blacksad: Amarillo is another beautiful crafted tale which will only make you want more!
